Artisanal and small-scale mining is often a poverty driven activity performed in remote communities with few economic alternatives.

THE FAIRMINED STANDARD FOR GOLD

The Iquira cooperative
FAIRMED CERTIFIED AND LEADERS IN RESPONSIBLE MINING

Located in the green hills of southwest Colombia, the Iquira Municipality Agro-Mineral Cooperative are a model example of how coffee, agriculture, livestock farming and gold mining can coexist sustainably.
Gold mining has provided the community with diversified economic alternatives where community members alternate between artisanal mining and farming.

The Iquira miners are leveraging this relatively new community activity to drive positive local change.
Because artisanal mining can have negative effects if not done properly, the co-operative members have been eager to learn about and implement the responsible social and environmental practices learned through their Fairmined Certification.
The cooperative supports approximately 450 people through their work. With increased income thanks to mining, the community has© greater opportunities and an amplified long-term business vision.
